Prenatal care in San Diego
If you’re visiting us because you’re expecting a baby, congratulations—and welcome. Whether you have just seen a positive test or are already feeling your baby move, a new part of your family’s story is taking shape.
Perhaps you are imagining the first time you will hold your baby. Perhaps you are also wondering how pregnancy will fit around work, family, and the life you already have. There is room for your excitement and for the questions that come with it.
Your prenatal visits should have room for that whole experience. With Tayna Chessman, LM, CPM, the conversation begins with you: what this pregnancy means to you, what you have been told, and what you still want to understand.
A familiar conversation as your pregnancy changes
Some visits may begin with excitement about a new movement. Others may begin with a question you have been carrying quietly. You do not need to decide whether a concern is important enough before mentioning it.
We review your health and pregnancy history, the care you have already received, and your priorities. From there, we discuss the clinical services appropriate to your situation and how your appointments and follow-up would be organized.

Understanding the choices in front of you
A test result, a screening decision, or a change in your birth plan can bring more than one question. We make space to talk through the information, what it means for your care, and when another clinician needs to be involved.
Visits may include assessment within the midwife’s scope, discussion of symptoms and wellbeing, records and results review, and preparation for upcoming decisions. You can also bring questions about nutrition, emotional support, feeding, and life after birth. Testing and referrals follow your individual care plan.
Preparing for birth—and the days that follow
Your picture of birth might already feel clear, or it might still be taking shape. Either way, prenatal care is a place to talk about the people you want beside you, what helps you feel grounded, and how you would want changes explained.
Families exploring home birth discuss suitability, preparation, and transfer planning. Families planning a hospital birth can ask about available prenatal support and coordination. We also look beyond the due date to recovery, feeding, and the practical help you will need at home.
A clear beginning
If you are changing providers, you may be hoping to feel more comfortable in your care. We will talk about that hope alongside the records, timing, and responsibilities needed for a thoughtful transition. Keep existing appointments until your new care has been accepted and arranged.
Before enrollment, confirm visit location, frequency, communication, laboratory arrangements, outside referrals, and payment. A complimentary care chat gives us a place to begin; it does not replace a clinical assessment.
Questions, answered
Can I start after receiving care elsewhere?
Ask about transfer availability. Acceptance depends on timing, records review, individual needs, and practice capacity.
Are all tests included?
Do not assume every test, ultrasound, or outside consultation is included. Request a written explanation for your care plan and exact insurance benefits.
Your prenatal visit rhythm
Our Birthstone home-birth care model schedules prenatal visits monthly until 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, and weekly until birth. Your schedule may change with your individual needs; prenatal-only care has its own agreed plan.
At your first prenatal visit, we review your health history, pregnancy dating, previous records, and lab and screening options. Ongoing visits include blood-pressure checks, assessment of your baby’s growth and heart tones, nutrition and wellbeing discussions, and time for birth and postpartum preparation.
Lab ordering and review are coordinated through your care. Laboratory processing, ultrasounds, and outside consultations may be billed separately; we explain your agreement and verify applicable benefits before enrollment.
You can begin with a conversation.
Tell Tayna what brings you here—the care you are hoping for, the questions you are carrying, or simply where you would like to start. We can talk through current availability and what the next step would involve.
