IEHP Midwife & Prenatal Care: Planning from San Diego and the Inland Empire

You may already know IEHP from your care in the Inland Empire and be wondering how those arrangements connect with plans in San Diego. A move, a temporary stay, or a new birth plan can bring questions you have not had to ask before.

We can begin with where you live, the care you already receive, and what you are hoping to arrange. From there, the plan and practice must verify the exact service, authorization, and location.

Which IEHP service area applies?

IEHP Medi-Cal lists Riverside and San Bernardino counties as its service area. A move, a temporary stay, or a plan to receive services elsewhere can raise separate questions. If you live in San Diego County, confirm your current county enrollment and any out-of-area authorization directly with the plan before booking.

Our current care pathway

Tayna’s Birthstone Midwifery practice has worked on IEHP care authorizations and credentialing. Individual authorizations and a practice-wide network agreement are different. We ask for service-specific verification rather than announcing that every IEHP member can receive every San Diego Midwifery service.

What to verify before your appointment

  • Your active plan and county enrollment.
  • The treating clinician, practice name, service, and appointment location.
  • Any referral, letter of agreement, or prior authorization and its approved dates.
  • Approved visit counts and how previous prenatal visits affect the remaining plan.
  • Which labs, ultrasound providers, postpartum visits, or birth services are included.

Prenatal care is not the same benefit as home birth

If prenatal visits are approved, ask separately about birth attendance, place of service, assistants, supplies, and postpartum care. Doula authorization also needs its own review. A verbal statement that pregnancy is covered is not a complete explanation of the proposed arrangement.

Keep your care connected

Keep current appointments until a transition has been accepted. Ask who will order tests, review results, arrange hospital care if needed, and communicate with your established provider. Send authorization documents through the practice’s designated process rather than a general email inquiry.

Continuity while the details are settled

It can be unsettling to have a care preference in mind while the administrative pieces are still being reviewed. Keep the support and appointments already in place as those questions are answered.

Ask for a written explanation of any accepted transition and remaining visit authorizations. Individual letters of agreement and practice-wide participation are different arrangements; we will be specific about what applies.

Begin with a benefits check

Request verification through Birthstone Midwifery and tell us your city and the service you are seeking. This request does not reserve care or establish coverage.

A few questions, answered

Can an IEHP member assume care in San Diego is covered?

No. Confirm current county enrollment, the proposed clinician and location, and any service-specific authorization or letter of agreement before scheduling or changing care.

You can begin with a conversation.

Tell Tayna what brings you here—the care you are hoping for, the questions you are carrying, or simply where you would like to start. We can talk through current availability and what the next step would involve.
