Medi-Cal Midwife, Prenatal Care & Doula Questions in San Diego
You deserve to explore care with the same questions as any family: will I be heard, what support is available, and how can I make the appointments fit my life?
If you use Medi-Cal, the next step is to match those needs with your exact plan, the proposed clinician, and any required authorization. This guide helps you prepare that conversation without treating all Medi-Cal arrangements as the same.
Identify your plan first
Straight Medi-Cal and managed-care arrangements are not interchangeable. If you have Community Health Group, use that plan’s current information. If your card says IEHP, check your county enrollment and out-of-area rules. A general Medi-Cal statement cannot confirm this practice’s participation with your specific product.
Clinical midwifery and doula support have different roles
A licensed midwife provides clinical care within scope. A doula provides nonclinical support. A doula benefit should not be represented as authorization for a prenatal clinical visit or birth attendance by a midwife. Ask which service has been requested and which provider is authorized.
Questions to ask before scheduling
- Is this clinician eligible and participating for the proposed service?
- Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
- Which location and dates are authorized?
- Who orders and bills labs and ultrasound?
- How are postpartum and newborn services arranged?
- Does any proposed birth setting need separate approval?
Avoid duplicate or disconnected care
Tell the practice about existing visits and upcoming testing. Before receiving prenatal care in two places, clarify who manages results and which clinician is responsible for time-sensitive decisions. Keep established care until a transition has been accepted.

Care that fits your everyday responsibilities
Work, transportation, and caring for other children can make an appointment about more than an available time slot. Tell the practice what you need to plan around.
Before changing providers, ask for a clear explanation of the accepted care arrangement and payment responsibilities. Continue established care until a transition is confirmed.
A few questions, answered
Does Medi-Cal coverage for a doula also authorize a midwife?
Not automatically. Clinical midwifery and nonclinical doula support have different roles and benefits. Verify the exact clinician, service, location, and authorization with your plan.
You can begin with a conversation.
Tell Tayna what brings you here—the care you are hoping for, the questions you are carrying, or simply where you would like to start. We can talk through current availability and what the next step would involve.
