CHM and Home Birth: Planning Your Midwife’s Global Fee

If you are expecting a baby, congratulations. You may already be imagining the first hours together at home, while also wondering how the care you want will fit your family’s budget.

For Christian Healthcare Ministries members, one useful place to begin is the midwife’s global fee: what it includes, when payment is due, and which documents CHM needs. Getting those details organized can leave more room for the personal parts of preparing for birth.

The short answer

CHM publishes maternity guidance that addresses midwife expenses, membership timing, and global-fee documentation. Your program and individual eligibility still control sharing. A practice estimate or accepted care agreement is not a CHM payment guarantee.

Start with the date, then the agreement

CHM’s current maternity information says membership must begin at least 300 days before the estimated delivery date. Ask CHM to review your actual membership and pregnancy dates rather than calculating eligibility from a general example.

Then request a written practice agreement. Discuss the prenatal visits, birth attendance, postpartum follow-up, assistants, and supplies proposed for your care. Identify anything billed by a laboratory, imaging provider, hospital, or another professional separately.

A global fee needs a clear description

CHM describes a prepayment agreement that identifies the provider, patient, included services, total fee, and payment dates or payment-plan details. It also distinguishes a fixed agreement from an estimate that may change.

A useful family question is: if this agreement changes, what will we receive in writing? Keep the original document and the explanation of any revision. Accurate paperwork should follow the care that was actually arranged or provided.

Ask about more than one clinical provider

CHM’s maternity page includes restrictions on sharing both midwife and physician expenses, with exceptions addressed in its guidelines. If you anticipate shared care or need a hospital transfer, ask CHM how those rules would apply before assuming every bill can be combined.

Clinical decisions and sharing decisions are separate. A transfer plan should be part of a thoughtful home-birth discussion regardless of the financial arrangement.

Keep the financial plan connected to your life

Your practice payment dates may differ from the timing of a sharing review. Talk about that gap before enrolling, particularly if you are also planning leave from work or help with older children.

Bring your city, due-date period, and care preferences into a consultation with Tayna. We can discuss current availability and the documentation the practice can provide; CHM determines sharing under its rules.

Questions families ask

Does a CHM membership automatically pay for my home birth?

No. Your program, maternity eligibility, guidelines, and bill review apply. Confirm the proposed clinician, services, and documents directly with CHM.

Can I use the same bill for every part of pregnancy care?

Ask what belongs in the practice’s global agreement and what requires a separate itemized bill. The agreement and bills should accurately reflect the services and providers involved.

Plan the care, then check the sharing rules
