Zion HealthShare Midwife & Home Birth Planning in San Diego

If you are a Zion HealthShare member, you may be exploring how sharing could fit the birth experience you hope for. That starts with two connected questions: what care is appropriate and available, and what expenses might your program consider?

We can discuss the first question with you and prepare an accurate description of proposed services. Zion’s current guidelines and review process address the second.

Our current relationship with Zion HealthShare

Birthstone Midwifery has contacted Zion’s maternity team. A special provider agreement or endorsement has not been confirmed. Contact the practice to discuss availability and request the documents needed for an individual sharing review.

What to know before relying on sharing

Zion’s 2026 guidelines have a maternity-specific Initial Unshareable Amount, timing rules, and separate provisions for newborn expenses. Its midwife provisions also address changes involving physician co-management or hospital delivery. The organization states that sharing is not guaranteed.

Ask about the whole care pathway

An uncomplicated plan at the beginning of pregnancy can change. Ask Zion how a midwife global fee, physician involvement, hospital services, and care for the baby would be treated together. Do not compare only the expected birth fee. A useful budget names the services that remain separate even when maternity expenses are eligible.

Questions to ask Zion HealthShare

  • Which version of the guidelines and membership start date apply to me?
  • What waiting period applies to my membership type?
  • Which maternity IUA applies to my planned midwife care?
  • What changes if physician co-management or hospital delivery is needed?
  • How do I open a newborn sharing request and meet enrollment deadlines?

A planning situation worth discussing

If your household has been a member for some time but you recently changed membership type, ask Zion which dates and rules it will use for this pregnancy. Do not assume a family member’s older membership automatically establishes your own maternity eligibility.

Care with Tayna in San Diego County

Start with the care you want, your city, and your timing. Ask about prenatal care, home birth, or postpartum follow-up and request a written explanation of services and payment dates. A sharing organization’s approval does not determine clinical eligibility for home birth, and acceptance into care does not guarantee that a bill will be shared.

Health sharing is not health insurance. Keep a plan for your financial responsibility while eligibility and payment are being reviewed. We can discuss the documentation the practice can provide; the organization makes its own sharing decisions.

Following your family’s actual timeline

The practice’s payment dates and a sharing review may not line up. Talk through the timing before assuming one will cover the other.

Build your plan around written responsibilities and retain the information your program requests. This gives you a clearer foundation while sharing eligibility and payment remain subject to the organization.

A few questions, answered

Does Zion HealthShare guarantee payment for midwifery care?

No. Health sharing is not insurance, and a provider inquiry or practice agreement does not guarantee sharing. Confirm your current program’s maternity rules and obtain written guidance for the proposed services.

How should I begin planning care with Tayna?

Discuss your city, timing, and intended services in a complimentary 30-minute consultation. Request a written care estimate, then ask Zion HealthShare which membership rules and documentation apply. Clinical eligibility and sharing eligibility are separate decisions.
